Power Quality Matters

According to the IEEE Standard Dictionary of Electrical and Electronics Terms, power quality is defined as “the concept of powering and grounding sensitive electronic equipment in a manner that is suitable to the operation of that equipment.” In layman’s terms, power quality is a set of boundaries that allows electrical systems to function safely in their intended manner even during voltage disturbances. Power quality issues including transients, sags, swells, harmonics, momentary interruptions and other disturbances have become increasingly important and many of these issues, if not adequately addressed, can have major safety and financial ramifications. As a result, the quality of electric service has become as important as reliability.

Some power quality problems stem from utility distribution and others are caused by power consumers themselves. Many problems originate with one customer and travel through the distribution or transmission system impacting other customers. As a result, it is important that utilities personnel, electrical engineers, electricians, facilities managers and even homeowners have access to pertinent power quality information.

PQSC – Collaboration and Education

Power Quality Service Center is a collaboration of electrical professionals committed to providing information about power quality from the point of production to the point of consumption. The organization offers educational materials created for utilities as well as the broad range of power users.

PQSC was founded by members of regional utilities in an effort to share resources and work together to tackle major power quality issues and develop a strong base of knowledge and expertise that can be shared among its members and all consumers of electrical power.

"PQSC has been valuable to us in providing educational materials about power quality and reliability that have a wide diversity and flexibility of application. We can use them internally to train our staff, use them with customer's to educate and support our business relationship and use them with our partners to ensure a common perspective of key issues. We could not have developed materials for these purposes on our own for the investment we have made in the PQSC."

- Jeff Harvey, Director of Product Development, Chevron Energy Solutions
